Review: Tame Impala – Apocalypse Dreams

‘Apocalypse Dreams’ is the latest offering from Tame Impala. While Kevin Parker’s other band has been going great guns (he is the drummer in Pond), this free download is intended to whet our appetites for the new Tame Impala album Lonerism, which is due later this year. So, what’s it sound like? Well, before Parker’s breathy vocals, you could be mistaken for thinking you were listening to some Motown: dance party drums, a rubbery bassline and thumping piano chords. But don’t worry, things aren’t as different here as that may sound. In fact, ‘Apocalypse Dreams’ is quite lovely, if very similar to the woozy Tame Impala we heard on their 2010 debut. But given how much we loved Innerspeaker, in this case, “more of the same” is a request, not a criticism.

You can download ‘Apocalypse Dreams’ for free here. First single, ‘Elephant’ is due for release later this month while Lonerism is touted to follow in October.
