Retrospective: Miles Kane

Before going solo, and before teaming up with Alex Turner in The Last Shadow PuppetsMiles Kane was in two bands.

Between 2004 and 2007, he was the guitarist in hotly-tipped Liverpool band The Little Flames. The Arctic Monkeys famously covered the Little Flames on their ‘Leave Before The Lights Come On’ single.

After that he fronted freakbeat combo The Rascals, a project which eventually overlapped with the Shadow Puppets. The Rascals were indebted to Echo and the Bunnymen and even covered ‘All That Jazz’ for the 2009 British indie film Awaydays, a gritty take on football hooliganism in the 1980s. While they struggled to find success, The Rascals was a great outlet for Miles to improve his songwriting. It was during this time that he started to perfect the reverb-soaked guitar lines you hear throughout Colour of the Trap. Kane left The Rascals in 2009 to pursue his solo career.

Miles Kane fans should seek out The Rascals debut (and only full-length) Rascalise. While it is not in the same league as Colour of the Trap or his work with The Last Shadow Puppets, The Rascals are definitely worth a listen.
